Chemical-Free Pest Control: Folk Methods & Plant-Based Remedies for Your Garden
In home gardens, non-chemical methods of pest control using traditional techniques can be employed.

Here are descriptions of plants and pest control recipes. When preparing infusions, decoctions, and powders, avoid touching your face or eyes. Leftover mixtures should be buried in the ground. We offer some recipes:

Burdock Infusion
Chop burdock leaves finely and fill up to one-third of a bucket, then fill with water. Let the mixture steep for 3 days and strain through gauze. Used against caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly and cutworms. Spray 3-4 times at intervals of 6-8 days. This will save the cabbage.
Potato Vine Infusion
Growing potatoes provides benefits even from the vines. Chop 1.2kg of fresh or 800g of dry potato vines, pour 10 liters of water over them, and let it sit for 3-4 hours. After straining, spray on any melon and vegetable crops against spider mites and aphids, which perish within 3-4 hours. Increasing the amount of potato vines makes it effective against leaf-eating pests as well.
Tomato Vine Decoction
Pour 10 liters of water over 400g of chopped tomato vines and simmer for 30 minutes. After settling, strain and add 3 liters of decoction and 40g of soap to 10 liters of water before use. Applied against caterpillars and aphids.
Black Nightshade Vine Decoction
The decoction of black nightshade vines is prepared similarly to the tomato vine decoction. It is used against the larvae of various pests and caterpillars. Increased efficacy against younger stages.
Bitter Pepper Decoction
Boil 1kg of chopped fresh or 500g of dry pods of bitter pepper for an hour in 10 liters of water in an enamel pot with a lid and steep for two days. Then mash the peppers, squeeze and strain them. The resulting decoction is stored in sealed bottles in a dark place. For spraying against caterpillars, slugs, and aphids, prepare a solution by adding 100g of concentrate and 40g of soap to 10 liters of water.
Garlic Infusion
Pass 50g of garlic through a meat grinder. Dilute in 10 liters of water. Infuse for 24 hours, then strain. Use garlic infusion against phytophthora on potatoes and tomatoes, mites and aphids on cucumbers and cabbage. Repeat spraying every 10-12 days.
Lime and Tobacco Dust
Sprinkle lime and tobacco dust along the rows of onions and garlic against onion flies at a rate of 1-2kg per 100m2. Repeat after 7-8 days. Wood ash can also be used.
Marigolds and Chicory
Chicory and marigolds (calendula) release phytoncides that suppress nematodes on onions and garlic, and also repel harmful insects. These plants are planted among onion and garlic beds.
Onion Infusion
Steep 200g of onion scales in 10 liters of hot water for a day. Onion infusion is effective against aphids and mites.
Yarrow Infusion
Chop and steam 800g of dried yarrow plants in boiling water for 30 minutes. Then fill up to 10 liters and let steep for two days. This infusion is sprayed against aphids and mites.
Wormwood Decoction
Boil 1kg of wormwood for 10 minutes and add water to make 10 liters. Add chicken manure infusion. Used against leaf-eating cabbage pests.
Mustard Solution
Dissolve 100g of mustard powder in 10 liters of water and spray against caterpillars and aphids. Dust dry powder in dry weather against slugs. Scatter on the soil at 100g per square meter.
Coriander and Castor Bean
Coriander and castor bean emit strong odors. The former repels mice, the latter repels flies, including the melon fly.
Hay and Straw Infusion
An infusion of rotted hay, straw, and cow dung is used against powdery mildew on cucumbers, squashes, watermelons, and melons. Pour 3 liters of water over 1kg of any of these materials and let them steep for 3 days. Then strain and dilute with water threefold. Repeat the spraying every 5-7 days.
Use of Birds
Birds are reliable helpers in controlling harmful insects. It is very beneficial to attract birds. Therefore, it is advisable to have birdhouses in private gardens and organize winter feeding of birds. It is a good idea to assign this task to children.
