Optimal Soil and Temperature Conditions for Grape Cultivation

Grapevines are widely grown in home gardens. Let's discuss the temperature and soil requirements for grapes.

Grapes. Temperature and soil requirements

Grapes are unsuitable for heavy, clayey, and waterlogged soils. Fortunately, such soils are rare. Grapevines are particularly sensitive to temperature throughout their life cycle. The active growth of grapes begins when the soil temperature at the depth where main roots are located reaches 8-9°C. For some grape varieties, growth can start even at a lower temperature of 6°C.

Grape Varieties Based on Maturity Timings

All grape varieties based on maturity timings are divided into five categories: very early, early, mid-season, late, and very late. To properly ripen, they require a specific accumulation of active temperatures and a certain number of days from the start of the first phase to the end of the sixth.

For very early varieties, the sum of active temperatures should be 2200°-2400°, with the number of days ranging from 110-120. For early varieties, 2400°-2500° and 120-130 days are required; mid-season varieties need 2600-2800° and 130-145 days; and late and very late varieties require over 2800° and more than 145 days. The sum of active temperatures is calculated by adding the average daily temperatures over the entire period above 10°C from the start of the first phase to the end of the sixth.

The lack of sufficient high temperatures is the main limitation for the spread of valuable table grape varieties in central regions. These varieties are successfully cultivated in Uzbekistan and other warmer regions.

This condition also explains the unsuccessful attempts by enthusiasts who indiscriminately import cuttings of good grape varieties from the steppes into central areas. However, a knowledgeable viticulturist can achieve a good harvest in central regions with appropriate variety selection and care.

Grape Varieties Based on Cold Hardiness

Grape varieties are classified based on cold hardiness into cover and non-cover types. This classification refers to whether a grape variety can be cultivated without winter protection or requires covering after the growing season. In the middle belt, all grape varieties need winter protection, while on the Black Sea coast, none require it.

One must choose a site favorably suited for the grape variety, considering slope, sunlight, vine shape, support, wind protection, water availability, depth to groundwater, soil fertility, and numerous other factors. Often, there is a question: is this variety climbing or not? There are no non-climbing grape varieties. It depends on the form of cultivation the viticulturist finds suitable.

In home gardens, preference should be given to varieties that can overwinter without protection and are resistant to pests and diseases. These can be used to create galleries, alleys, and arbors not only in home gardens but also on school grounds and in parks.

Grapes can decorate commercial points, create car shelters, green homes, building ensembles, and provide "green supports." Enthusiasts have such grape varieties and harvest decent yields.

Frequently Asked Questions
